Last Tuesday, 44-year-old Olalekan Akanji of 40 Arowojobe Street in Oshodi area of Lagos state told the court that he would want his 10- year marriage to Chika Akanji dissolved on the grounds of trouble making, infidelity and lack of respect. “
All she knows is making trouble from one person to another. No member of my family dares visit my home again because I have a wife who is ready to fight everybody at the same time at the slightest opportunity. And as if that is not bad enough, she sleeps around with different men. I have seen several romantic text messages from various men on her phone and whenever I confront her with it, she would deny after she has deleted the messages. Now she has even put security code on all her phones so I would not have access to the messages anymore.
On three different occasions, I caught her being dropped off by one of her boyfriends. As a matter of fact, I had a fight with him on one occasion. “The worst thing is that her father is not even helping matters as all he cares about is money. Ever since business went bad for me and I could not afford to give as much as I used to, things have drastically changed so much so that her father would not want to hear me say anything. He now treats me like a nobody, all because I don’t have as much as I used to. He would rather have his daughter sleep with men and bring him money even when he knows that she is married.
The last three years have been a living hell for me and all I just want now is for this union to be dissolved and for the court to grant me custody of our two daughters 7 and 5 years old respectively because I will not want her to influence my children and mislead them the way she has been misled,” he said. Chika on the other hand denied all the allegations levelled against her, saying that she is not a trouble maker. She also disclosed that she has received a lot of humiliation from Olalekan’s family members simply because she is not Yoruba and has not been able to give him a male child. “His family members have been very hostile to me. They will come to the house to fight me and abuse me, calling me all sorts of names.
They even said I am the one who destroyed my husband’s business, that I am a witch and a never-do-well. And my husband is not helping matters too as he would say all kinds of terrible things about me. He would tell them that I am a prostitute and that I sleep around with all kinds of men, which is not true. The man he is claiming he saw me with and fought with, I have nothing to do with him. He is my colleague in the office and he only gave me a ride home since he passes through my area to go to his house. He just embarrassed me and himself that day.
Any man he sees with me is sleeping with me. He will check my phone at will and any male name he sees there is automatically sleeping with me. I am tired of the marriage and will rather want the union dissolved so I can live my life in peace. I would also want the court to grant me custody of our children.
“Every little opportunity he has, he would curse and insult me not caring who is present. He would accuse me of sleeping around, whereas he is the one who is always in the midst of women. I am just sick of the marriage. All I want now is divorce,” she said. After listening to both parties, the court president adjourned the case to October 29, 2013 for judgment.
